Often the fall can feel like a new beginning. The summer months might be filled with activities, vacations, and events that distract us from our more standard routine. Many of us grew up on an academic schedule that began in the fall, programming our mind to associate the new season with a new start.
This is also a great time to consider hitting the reset button on your personal goals, self-care practices and your fertility journey if you’ve taken some time this summer to pause and refresh. A great place to start is with new affirmations and a consistent practice of positive talk.
What are positive affirmations?
Positive thinking is incredibly powerful when managing something as emotional and overwhelming as struggling to conceive and fertility treatments.
A daily practice of affirmations is an easy way to encourage positive messages to the brain which can influence overall wellness and reduce stress which is healthy for our fertility.

How do positive affirmations work?
With each positive statement, you train your brain to focus on the positive sources. Over time the mind recognizes these statements as beliefs and learns to focus on the positive thought and resist negative and self-harming thoughts.
How can an affirmation practice help with fertility?
When trying to get pregnant our whole self can be under stress – physical, mental, and emotional. Repeating daily affirmations can help overcome fear, fight self-doubt, and reshape how you feel and manage a situation. A consistent practice is also highly effective in reducing stress and lowering cortisol levels. Cortisol is a hormone that rises with stress and can interfere with progesterone production, a crucial hormone for getting pregnant.
A regular affirmation practice can help with healthy habit forming, more restful sleep and overall physical health – all very important when trying to get pregnant.

How do you begin an affirmation practice?
Affirmations should be specific to you with a particular situation or goal in mind. General statements, such as I am a good person, won’t be as powerful.
Choose 3-5 statements that resonate with you - see my examples below for ideas. Affirmation statements should begin with I am, I can, or I will. Write down your statements and place them somewhere you will see them regularly – your desk, your bathroom mirror, your coffee maker, etc.
Plan to say the affirmations out loud a few times a day, each day. It may be awkward at first but with a consistent practice it will begin to feel more natural and eventually you will experience the power of positive affirmations and how they can help you confidently manage challenges in your life, including your quest to get pregnant.
